Haakon and Joakim work as developers at mnemonic. Here they use their development background to help security analysts detect suspicious activity, stop data breaches and alert customers to potential threat.
"More people without a security background should open their eyes to this industry. You learn a lot from being in a security environment like this, while at the same time enhancing your professional skills," says Joakim.
"We're an international team of 25 developers with different educational backgrounds like UX, backend, frontend and integrations. Our different skillsets complement each other," he continues.
Innovation from within the organisation
The developers work closely with the analysts who actually use the platform, and mnemonic's security operations center (SOC) is just a few floors away from the development department. The two groups are familiar with each other's workflows, and together they spend a lot of time continuously optimising the platform.
"We know that a security analyst only has 2-4 minutes to decide whether a security incident is a real threat to the customer or not. Therefore, we need to be sure that the tools we create make everyday life easier for analysts. Not slower," says Haakon.
"A great example of this is our shortcut library that allows analysts to do analysis as quickly as possible using pre-made queries. It's exciting to know that these tools have helped report major incidents that have been covered in the news. It's actually our code that helped report these incidents. It makes you proud to know that you're building something of critical value for so many others."
You make a difference no matter what level you are at
During their time at mnemonic, they have seen the development department change and adapt to new ways of working.
"There are no shortcuts to writing high-quality code. That's why we spend a lot of time learning about and trying out new ways to achieve our goals. We find that new hires with experience from other places are surprised by how solid and innovative our processes are, and we see the value this has brought to our group," says Joakim.
"We work in a "squad structure", which means that we all work on several different applications while being supported by relevant resources from frontend, backend and UX. Squads help to break up the large ecosystem behind our security platform into more manageable sizes. From experience, we see that this also limits the amount of context switching."
They also explain that the development department has a flat structure with little bureaucracy around decisions.
"No matter how long you've been here or what your job title is, your opinions and suggestions are valued and taken into account. In addition, I know that many of us appreciate the many opportunities for personal growth through dedicated days for self-development, courses and shared learning and innovation days," Haakon states.
